german5000 has no accounts and sets no cookies. Your test result and progress stay in your browser. Fonts and the site's own scripts come from this site; the one exception is the Ahrefs analytics script described below.

What stays in your browser

Your test result, the words you are learning, your review schedule, daily goal and streak are saved in your browser's local storage on this device, under the key g5k (plus g5k-test-run while a test is unfinished). They are never sent to us. Clearing your browser's site data deletes them, and they don't follow you to another device or browser. The dashboard has a button that deletes them too.

What the server sees

Like any website, our web server writes a standard access log line for each request: IP address, time, the page requested, the browser's user-agent string and the referring page. We use these logs only to keep the site running and to stop abuse, and they are deleted automatically after about eleven days.

Analytics

We count page visits with Ahrefs Web Analytics. Each page loads a small script from analytics.ahrefs.com, which sends Ahrefs the page address, the referring page, your browser and device type and your approximate country. Ahrefs says the tool sets no cookies and does not identify individual visitors. Your saved words and test results are never included. Blocking that script does not affect anything on the site.

Audio

The play buttons use the text-to-speech voice built into your device. Some browsers send that text to their own speech service; that is between you and your browser, and we never receive it.
