Food and drink in German

Meals take zum: zum Frühstück, zum Mittagessen, zum Abendessen. Obst and Gemüse are uncountable, so a single piece is ein Stück Obst, and Nudeln is always plural. Das Essen is both food and a meal; with a small e, essen is the verb. Of these 47 words, 13 are among the 5,000 most common; the other 34 are basic words, marked with a dash.
